Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has warned the Blues that acquiring Edinson Cavani would be a gamble, especially considering how things worked out with other big-name forwards in Radamel Falcao and Gonzalo Higuain.

The Times report that the London side have made a bid for the Uruguayan striker with a view of signing him on loan for the rest of the season, with the attacker looking to leave French supremos Paris Saint-Germain in search of more playing time.

Chelsea are said to have made a loan offer of £5 million and are willing to cover Cavani’s £360,000-a-week wages but PSG prefer moving the striker on a permanent deal, while he is reported to have his eyes set on La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid.

With just about a week left to go before the transfer window slams shut, anything can happen. And Cascarino, who spent two years at Chelsea as a player, reckons the Uruguay international could be a great signing at the right price yet warns that it would be a gamble.

“If you can get him, he’s available and he can come at the right price, yes,” the erstwhile forward told talkSPORT. “Cavani has scored unbelievable goals for PSG, he always gets chances, every time I’ve watched him he gets chances to score.

“You don’t want to bring in people who are going to unsettle it slightly, but, if it works for the club, yes it’s a really good deal. What we’re seeing in this market is that loan deals are more realistic than buying players at the moment.”

“It would be a gamble [to sign Cavani].

Cascarino has also sympathised with France forward Olivier Giroud, who has been mostly overlooked by Frank Lampard this season. Giroud could secure a move to Internazionale this month but the Italian side are also reported to be looking at Napoli’s Fernando Llorente, something which could leave the Frenchman in the cold and possibly dash Chelsea’s pursuit of Cavani.

“I’ve never quite understood why [Olivier] Giroud has been cast aside so quickly,” Cascarino added. “He did brilliantly for Arsenal and he came to Chelsea, and he wasn’t the no.1 choice but then became the no.1 choice – and he leads the line for France.

“I think it’s strange that he’s been pushed aside.

“Tammy [Abraham] did really well and has become the No.1, but he’s now had the dip every young player has, and Chelsea should have always prepared for that.”

Abraham’s dip has coincided with a poor spell for the Blues, who have failed to win three of their last five Premier League games. Fortunately, the trailing Manchester United have been dropping points and Chelsea’s recent draw against Arsenal saw them open a six-point gap over the Red Devils.

The Blues are still favoured to finish in the top four and fans looking to bet on that outcome would likely welcome the opportunity to claim free bets from all the top betting companies in the UK. Bet365 are offering 8/15 odds on Lampard’s men finishing in a Champions League place while United are 9/2. Odds have shortened for Tottenham, who are now 7/2 after their win over Norwich City on Wednesday.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are 20/1 with Ladbrokes and the bookies are offering 8/1 on Wolves while Sheffield United are at 40/1 and Everton are at 66/1.

The Blues are 13/8 to creep into the top 3 on the Betfair Exchange but, given the eight-point difference between themselves and Leicester City (2/9), as well as their wobbly form, it seems highly unlikely at the moment.

According to a reports that emerged yesterday, Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin. The Daily Telegraph claims that the La Liga side are willing to offer Spanish winger Vitolo as part of any deal with the North London Club.

Serie A giants Juventus were keen last summer on bringing Bellerin to Italy but were deterred by Arsenal’s £50 million price tag. The Gunners will be demanding at least the same again and are unlikely to look upon Vitolo as part of any deal. The 29-year-old has made just 13 starts in La Liga since his arrival from Las Palmas in 2017.

The money from any sale of Bellerin would be re-invested straight into the side but Arsenal are feeling the pinch as they face a third successive season outside of the Champions League.

According to reports, Manchester United are prepared to offer Paul Pogba a pay rise if he decides to stay at the Old Trafford club.

The World Cup winner has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford this Summer and with both Juventus and Real Madrid believed to be interested, this is believed to have unsettled the player. Pogba said on the weekend that now could be the time for him to start looking for a challenge elsewhere. However according to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are determined to keep the French Midfielder and are prepared to make him the highest paid player at the club.

Manchester United have already informed any club interested in Pogba that he is not for sale although it is being reported in Spain that he is prepared to take a pay cut in his current wages to make the switch to Real Madrid. The paper also added that Real Madrid have already made an opening offer to United of £90 million but that it has been rejected by the Premier League side.

Pogba has two years left on his current deal although Manchester United have the option to extend it by a further year.

The Mail claims that executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward wants Pogba to stay at the club, not so much because of the potential of his performances on the field but because of his commercial value.

Harry Redknapp has revealed that it would be a “major surprise” if Frank Lampard was not the one to take over as Chelsea manager after Maurizio Sarri’s departure to Serie A Giants Juventus.

Frank Lampard, who will be turning 41 on the 20th of June, has a very successful spell as a player for the Blues, becoming the club’s record goalscorer and winning three Premier League titles as well as the Champions League with the London Club.

The former England midfielder has been a very impressive manager during his first season in management at Derby, guiding the Rams to a 6th place finish in the Sky Bet Championship and then onto the play-off final at Wembley.

Despite Derby looking to tie down Lampard’s future, he remains the overwhelming favourite to take over at Stamford Bridge.

Former Chelsea bosses Rafael Benitez and Jose Mourinho have also been touted as potential replacements for Sarri, who guided the London club to Europa League success last season.

Redknapp claims that it is only a matter of time before his nephew Lampard will be the next manager at Chelsea.

“I think it would be a major surprise if he doesn’t get the job. It looks to me as though it will happen,” Redknapp said on talkSPORT’s Sports Breakfast.

“It would be brilliant for him. A shame for Derby as (owner) Mel Morris gave him the opportunity there and he’s done a great job. But it’s a great move; he’s absolutely idolised at Chelsea – a genuine legend there.

“He knows the game, he knows what it’s about, he’s got a touch of class… it will be great.”

“He (Lampard) has a squad there that for sure will finish top six,” said Redknapp, who also had spells at Portsmouth, Tottenham and QPR.

“I see them next season finishing, at best, third, probably fourth; around where they were last season.

The Belgium international spent the 2nd half of last season on loan at Premier League club Leicester City where he impressed for the Foxes. Leicester are currently in talks over a permanent deal but are not happy with Monaco’s asking price of £40 million.

However, the Telegraph claims that despite having had Tielemans watched on a number of occasions last season United are no longer interesting in making a bid of their own.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has hinted that he could make a Manchester United exit.

The France international has been linked with a move away from United after the season ended and with both Juventus and Real Madrid interested it seems like this could be possible. But speaking on Sunday, Pogba now could be the time for what he might see as a “new challenge”.

“Like you said, there is a lot of talking and a lot of thinking as well,” he said.

“For me I have been for three years in Manchester and have been doing great; some good moments and some bad moments, like everybody. Like everywhere else.

“After this season and everything that happened this season, with my season being my best season as well… I think for me it could be a good time to have a new challenge somewhere else.

“I am thinking of this: to have a new challenge somewhere else.”

Reports over the weekend claimed Real are refusing to meet United’s valuation of £160 million for the French Midfielder.

According to reports, Arsenal have been told that they will need to pay €30 million (almost £27 million) for the Paris Saint-Germain full-back Thomas Meunier, if they plan on bringing him yo the Emirates.

The Belgium international has been linked with a move away from the club since the 2018/19 season ended with. Reports in France over the weekend claiming that Unai Emery has made his interest known to the PSG board. However, the French club have responded with a valuation of €30 million that may be a problem for the Gunners who are believed to have a £40m budget for this transfer window.

The Gunners are also known to be interested in Sampdoria duo Joachim Andersen and winger Dennis Praet but are struggling to meet the Italian club’s valuation of £49 million. They are also interested in Praet and Meunier’s international team-mate Yannick Carrasco (who is also on Bayern Munich’s radar).

At present it seems the only way the Gunners will be able to do deals for all of those players is by selling.

There is also the problem of whether Meunier will accept a move to the Emirates. Speaking last week to Belgian TV station RTBF he said:

“I will repeat myself again. My ambition is to stay in Paris,” he said.

“If they want me, that will be even better – we will be hand in hand. If they do not want me, then we will find a solution.”

According to reports emerging from Italy, Juventus are prepared to launch a bid for Manchester United Striker Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgium international has has not had the best time at Old Trafford since his big money move from Everton to the Old Trafford club. This season has been particularly difficult for Lukaku. He has only been able to score 6 Premier League goals at an average of one for every 197 minutes on the pitch.

According to Italian website Calciomercato, Juve are keeping an eye on Lukaku’s situation. They re looking to sign a new striker in the summer as they seek a long-term replacement for veteran forward Mario Mandzukic. The Croatia international will be 33 years old at the end of the season.

Lukaku missed Saturday’s 5-1 victory over Cardiff City in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first game in charge. He is believed to have been on compassionate leave.
