Manchester United Target Nuno Mendes to Bolster Left Wing-Back Position

Manchester United’s struggles this season have reached a critical point, with the team suffering four consecutive defeats in all competitions and failing to score in their last three matches. Adding to their challenges, they are set to face league leaders and arch-rivals Liverpool, who are in much better form and boast a superior squad.

Despite signing five players in the summer, United have seen minimal improvement, with many new arrivals struggling to adapt to Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system. To turn their season around, the Portuguese manager is reportedly eyeing reinforcements in the January transfer window, with Nuno Mendes emerging as a key target.

Nuno Mendes Looking for a Move

Mendes, who previously played under Amorim at Sporting CP, has struggled for game time at Paris Saint-Germain this season. The 22-year-old left-back has started just eight Ligue 1 matches, as PSG manager Luis Enrique has shown a preference for using Lucas Beraldo, a natural centre-back, in the left-back role. Frustrated with his lack of opportunities, Mendes is reportedly eager to leave PSG and reunite with Amorim at Manchester United.

Reports Confirm Mendes’ Interest in United

According to Correio da Manhã, Mendes is keen on a move to Old Trafford and is even planning his personal life around the potential transfer. His girlfriend, a Brazilian model currently based in Portugal, is reportedly preparing to relocate to Manchester with him.

Mendes has a proven track record under Amorim, having played a pivotal role as Sporting CP’s main left wing-back during their title-winning 2020-21 campaign. His experience in the position and familiarity with Amorim’s system make him an ideal candidate to address United’s issues at left wing-back.

Reinforcing a Weak Spot

United’s current options in the position, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, have been plagued by injuries, leaving a significant gap in the squad. Mendes’ dynamic style of play, which combines defensive solidity with attacking flair, could provide the consistency and quality United need on the left flank.

A Crucial Decision for United

As United look to salvage their season, Mendes could be a transformative signing. His arrival would not only strengthen a problematic area but also inject much-needed energy and creativity into the squad. With Mendes eager to make the move, the ball is now in Manchester United’s court to finalise the deal.

What do you think? Would Mendes be the answer to United’s problems on the left side?
