Manchester United Eye Nuno Mendes for Left Wing-Back Role

Manchester United are reportedly targeting Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes as their top choice for the left wing-back position. The 22-year-old Portuguese international is said to be keen on reuniting with his former Sporting CP manager, Ruben Amorim, at Old Trafford.

Defensive Struggles at United

United have had a difficult Premier League campaign, amassing just 22 points halfway through the season. Defensive vulnerabilities, particularly on the left side, have been a recurring issue under Amorim. The manager is reportedly eager to address this with a significant signing, and Mendes appears to be the preferred solution.

Currently contracted with PSG until June 2025, Mendes has reportedly declined a new contract offer from the French champions, citing dissatisfaction with their proposed salary. This situation has opened the door for a potential move to Manchester. Mendes, who joined PSG for £34 million in 2022, played under Amorim at Sporting CP, where he excelled as a left wing-back—a role United urgently need to strengthen.

Financial Constraints Could Complicate the Deal

While Mendes appears interested in a transfer, Manchester United face financial hurdles that could impact the deal. The club is close to breaching Premier League sustainability rules and may need to offload players such as Casemiro, Marcus Rashford, and Antony on loan to create room for new signings. Reducing their wage bill by subsidising salaries could be key to freeing up funds for Mendes’ acquisition.

What Mendes Brings to the Table

Mendes’ all-round abilities make him an ideal candidate for United’s left wing-back role. This season, he boasts an impressive 90% passing accuracy in Ligue 1 and has demonstrated excellent tackling, ball recoveries, and duel-winning skills. His overlapping runs and dribbling ability have also been standout features, highlighting his potential to enhance United’s attacking and defensive balance.

With a strong connection to Amorim and the attributes needed for the left wing-back role, Mendes could be a transformative signing for Manchester United. However, the move hinges on the club’s ability to navigate its financial challenges in the January transfer window.

Fans will be watching closely as United attempt to solve one of their most pressing issues this season.
