Roma make improved bid for Manchester United defender

Italian side AS Roma have made a new bid for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling. Smalling has been at United since 2010 but spent last campaign on loan at the Italian club and was one of their best players.

It is understood that Roma are keen on Smalling as they look to secure the backline. Smalling ability and familiarity with the club is seen as a huge factor for Roma.

A bid of around £10.9m has been made by the club with a further add on fee of £2.7m. Manchester United are open to selling but are demanding a transfer fee of £15m.

Smalling is eager to return to Rome but with multiple years on his deal United are looking to get a premium fee for the 30 year old.

Corriere dello Sport says that Roma want an answer from the Manchester side this week and have lined up alternatives if a deal is not reached. Juventus defender Daniel Rugani is thought to be one of the players viewed as an alternative to Smalling.

Manchester United are likely to sell as waiting an extra 12 months means that his value would depreciate.
