Manchester United defender completes permanent move to Serie A

Chris Smalling has finally completed a permanent switch to Roma from Manchester United. After weeks of negotiations, the two clubs held positive talks in the past few days as they finally reached a deal.

The Englishman spent last season on loan at Stadio Olimpico and the Italian club have been trying to bring him back on a permanent deal.

The former Manchester United man who has finally signed a three years deal with the option of an additional year had been agitating for a move to Roma throughout the summer where he had a great season on a season-long loan.

Roma have paid an initial £13.6m which could rise to £20m with add-ons. The centre-back who was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2010 from Fulham, has appeared 323 times for Manchester United, where he won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, a League Cup and the Europa League.

United posted on their website: “Everyone at Manchester United would like to thank Chris for his years of service, dedication and professionalism, and wish him all the best for his future.”

Smalling also issued a farewell message to Manchester United supporters and has claimed that although he joined Roma on a temporary basis last year, he “instantly” knew it was going to be his long-term home.
