Man City confirm departure of veteran goalkeeper

Manchester City have confirmed the departure of Claudio Bravo.

The Chile goalkeeper was one of Pep Guardiola’s first signings when he joined City from Barcelona for an initial £15 million (£20m) fee in the summer of 2016, recording 20 clean sheets in his first season.

Bravo was made first choice on his arrival at the Etihad Stadium after Guardiola decided against continuing with former No 1 Joe Hart, and he went on to make 30 appearances in all competitions in his debut season.

The veteran goalkeeper then became Ederson’s deputy following the Brazilian’s arrival at the club a year later and since then his first-team opportunities have largely been limited to cup competitions as he won the Premier League and the EFL Cup twice during his time in England.

The 37-year-old, who missed the majority of the 2018/19 season with a ruptured Achilles tendon, made 61 appearances for City.

He is now expected to sign La Liga outfit Real Betis with negotiations over his salary still ongoing as he prepares to accept a significant pay cut at Benito Villamarin Stadium.

Los Verdiblancos’ newly-appointed head coach Manuel Pellegrini has requested for the Chilean shot-stopper to be brought in as he prepares to shore up a defence that conceded 61 goals in La Liga last term.

City have confirmed the veteran shot-stopper’s exit in a statement via their official website, which reads: “Claudio Bravo has left Manchester City after four years with the club.

“Bravo will be best remembered for bringing a new style of goalkeeping to City – the so-called ‘sweeper-keeper’, with his excellent technique and control with the ball at his feet.

Zack Steffen will be understudy to Ederson in the Manchester City squad next season.

The Blues will take the USA international keeper back from his loan at Fortuna Dusseldorf to replace Claudio Bravo.
