Leipzig keen on retaining Chelsea target

Leipzig are keen on retaining the services of France defender Dayot Upamecano in the summer. The talented defender has been one of the most impressive performers for the German side this season as they posed a challenge to Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title.

His performances has attracted interest across Europe with a host of clubs interested in his services. It had recently been reported that London clubs Arsenal and Chelsea had made bids for the defender.

Upamecano is also in a unique position due to his contract running off in less than a year time and this has put more pressure on Leipzig to sell. However, Leipzig chief Oliver Mintlzlaff expects the defender to remain at the club next season.

Mintzlaff commented to Kicker: “I expect he will play with us next season. He also believes that the club would be able to agree a new deal with the defender to avoid him leaving on a free transfer citing Timo Werner as an example.

“We’ve had some good talks to find a solution, so we avoid him leaving us for free next year. “Timo Werner stayed, and I expect that we will do our homework properly so that Dayot will stay

Upamecano is a quality talent and with his contract up next season it is highly likely that RB Leipzig will sell in the summer.
