Aston Villa have not held any discussions about signing Ross Barkley permanently from Chelsea. The Chelsea loanee has been in excellent form with Villa since arriving on loan from the Blues for this season.
While Villa would love to have a player of his quality for many years to come, the manager Dean Smith preferred to speak about the prevailing circumstance when he was asked about Barkley.
Speaking ahead of Friday’s clash against Leeds United, Smith told Sky Sports: “It’s nothing that has been talked about, our discussions were only for the end of the season.”
The midfielder said that being benched regularly by Chelsea gave him “the hunger to go away and work harder.”
The midfielder scored a late winner for his new club Villa in Sunday’s Premier League victory over Leicester City, having thrived in the 7-2 win over Liverpool before the international break.
Barkley has impressed in the early weeks of the campaign, leading to suggestions of an England recall.
“To put in consistent performances you need consistent game time. For me it was an exciting project to come here and play consistently because I haven’t had that for a couple of years,” he told the Guardian.
“It was just a stop-start constantly [at Chelsea]. Now I’m finding my rhythm and I feel really good. I’ve played two full 90s and I’m really looking forward to the next game. Now I’ve got a clear mind and every game that comes I know what I need to do.”
