Arsenal to sell striker to Atletico Madrid

Arsenal will sell Alexandre Lacazette to Atletico Madrid for £30million if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signs a new contract, according to reports.

The Gunners have faced a battle to keep hold of both strikers due to financial constraints but could be about to lose their No9.

Lacazette joined Arsenal in the summer of 2017 from Lyon, but has often been on the substitutes’ bench since manager Mikel Arteta’s arrival at the club in December as the successor to Unai Emery.

The report says that the French striker almost joined Atletico Madrid in 2017 before the Spanish side were hit with a transfer ban by FIFA.

Arsenal came calling and paid Lyon an initial club-record £47.7m for him in July 2017 on a five years deal.

Since then, despite scoring 48 goals in 127 appearances, Lacazette has struggled at times to hold down the No9 position under Arsene Wenger, Unai Emery, and now Mikel Arteta.

With Aubameyang looking likely to stay and youngsters like Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Martinelli knocking on the door, Lacazette could find himself expendable.

Allowing Lacazette to join Diego Simeone could possibly pave the way for Arsenal transfer target Thomas Partey to join Arteta side.

Lacazette is also reportedly unhappy at Arteta focusing his future plans around Aubameyang, particularly with young strikers on the periphery of the first-team too.

Both Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Martinelli have impressed at different points throughout the course of this season and where Lacazette fits moving forward remains unclear.

Although Lacazette did start in the FA Cup final victory over the Blues, the Gunners’ potential signing of free agent Willian, following his release from Chelsea, also slims Lacazette’s chance of regularly starting minutes week in, week out.
