Arsenal move for Mendy ruined by work permit issues

The Gunners saw a move for Moroccan Defender Hamza Mendyl ruined by work permit issues. THe defender moved from French side Lille to Bundesliga side Schalke 04. The German side’s head coach Christian Heidel pointed out that the Arsenal interest almost ended the move for the club.

“He is currently in London. We were worried for a while,” Heidel said on Monday.

“But a move for Hamza Mendyl to Arsenal failed due to the lack of a work permit. This is complicated for non-EU citizens in the UK. I think otherwise he would have gone to Arsenal.”

Schalke paid Lille £5.3million for the 20-year-old with up to £800K more in add-ons and bonuses.

Mendyl was part of the Morocco side that played in the World Cup finals in Russia.
