Shkodran Mustafi has turned down the offer of a new deal at Arsenal and would like to depart the North London club at the end of the season, reports have claimed.
Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi rejected the club’s offer of a new deal during the summer, instead choosing to leave when his current contract expires at the end of the season.
According to reports, the Germany international is keen on a move to Italy where his wife’s Albanian-Swiss family live nearby in Switzerland.
Mustafi is out of contract next summer and enjoyed a brief renaissance under Mikel Arteta, starting 15 of 17 games under the Spaniard before requiring knee surgery in July.
The German centre-back was put on the transfer list by Unai Emery in the summer of 2019 having joined from Valencia in 2016 for £35million.
Mikel Arteta has reintroduced him into the first-team squad over the past year but that hasn’t stopped the 28 years old from seeking pastures anew.
Arteta revealed in July that he was pleased with the Germany international’s contribution amid speculation over the possibility of a new deal.
“That’s something the club has to address but he knows my opinion,” he said.
“I’m really happy with him as you can see. The way he’s playing, how committed he is with everything we’re trying to do, the level of his performance every three or four days, he’s been really consistent.” Lazio and Napoli have recently been linked with the services of the German defender.
